A New World For You

2024 Indie Ink Awards Finalist; Writing the Future We Need: Asian Representation by an Asian Author

His life wasn't perfect, but Ewan was content with his life; he had a girlfriend, he had friends. Isn't that what matters? He wasn't looking to be a hero, but when he unintentionally takes a bullet meant for someone else, he is thrown into the afterlife and asked to become one.

Defeat an evil overlord in another world? Not what he wanted to do in his first life, and certainly not what he wants to do in his next. But it is his only chance to get back home.

So reluctantly, Ewan accepts. After all, you can't keep a good man down. But things go from bad to worse when he's captured by a secret organization dedicated to a death god. What started as a mission to reclaim his old life becomes a desperate bid to free himself in this one, too.

A fun take on the isekai genre sort of mashed with dark fantasy, A New World For You starts off with a bang. Technically, several bangs. This kicks off an impossible quest to free a world that is not his own, filled with monsters, gods, magic, and danger around every corner. Fans of anime, video games, and LitRPG will be right at home with many of the tropes and references, though Lara always puts his own unique spin on things.

I love the deconstruction of the genre! It's definitely a bit darker and more mature than what you might find on Crunchyroll and delves a lot deeper into the themes of choice and self-determination.

Immediately this book felt like reading a Murakami novel with the thoughtful way each detail was described in this book. A New World for You is the type of book for me that is impossible to put down

Ka'ua Lara does not fail to deliver with his debut book. I've read a lot of fantasy over the years and A New World For You brings a fresh take to the 'woke up in another world' subgenre. The world building is excellent and Ka'ua's ability to set the scene with vivid descriptions of landscapes, environments and individuals pulls you write into the world they've built.
